TOBIN Times Staff Writer ST. PETERSBURG So much happened that it takes 10 minutes for Paula Noggle to tell how her husband, "Jack the Barber," went down hill after a lifetime of good health. It started with the sore tooth about six years ago, which led doctors to the cancer in his jaw, which led to the discovery that his arteries were badly occluded.
No wonder it had bothered him in later years to stand at the barber's chair for hours. After jaw surgery May 30, Jack Noggle came home Sunday. When someone needed a haircut in the hospital, he did it for free. He raised prices five times in 33 years, but only a few cents when he needed to cover a rent increase.
When he retired in 2006 at age 80, he charged $6. "He would say, 'I'm here to make a living; I'm not here to make a killing," Paula said. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois; 2 daughters, Geri Patricia; 1 son, Jeffrey; 5 grandchildren, Erin, Matthew, Elizabeth, Ashley, Katie; and 4 great-grandchildren.
He served 30 years active duty in the Air Force, including a tour of duty in Vietnam during the infamous 1968 Tet offensive. He then worked 21 years at the Clearwater Post Office for a total of 51 years governmental service. He was a selftaught tennis player, starting at the age of 11 on the public court in his home town. He came to love tennis and played at least 4 times a week until age of 79. He was a member of Skycrest United Methodist Church spent many happy hours volunteering there.

Jack Noggle grew up in the Akron, Ohio, area, the youngest of eight children. He enlisted in the Navy out of high school and served in World War II aboard the submarine Sea Owl. Jack moved to Florida in the early 1970s and divorced a few years later. By 1981, he was dating Paula's roommate, but Paula didn't like how she treated Jack. With the roommate's okay, Paula and Jack began dating.
"The first thing I think I fell in love with was his eyes," Paula said. "He had the softest, brownest eyes that pretty much let you know this was a gentle man." On their wedding day, July 31, 1982, Jack was cutting hair at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony was at 6.
